Engine Cooling & Coolant Fluid 101

The internal combustion engine generates power by controlling small yet rapid explosions every minute. The byproduct of this power production is lots of heat that would overwhelm the engine’s moving parts without a temperature control system. Engine cooling relies on coolant fluid absorbing and carrying away heat through the water pump in the engine. Coolant fluid is always cycling when the engine is running, which will eventually cause it to get contaminated, break down, leak, or otherwise experience defective performance. With the ultimate consequence of poor engine cooling being an overheated engine, it is an excellent decision to get the coolant exchanged according to the maintenance schedule or if the engine’s temperature increases above average.

Coolant Fluid & Cabin Heating System

Coolant fluid’s relationship to the heating system seems counter-intuitive but is true; engine-cooling and cabin-heating systems work alongside one another and both rely on the same coolant fluid to get their jobs done despite opposing objectives. The heat held by the coolant fluid after exiting the engine is the same heat used for the heater that warms up the vehicle’s cabin. It is for this reason that coolant fluid that has become contaminated or leaks can cause the same paradoxical results in both ineffective engine cooling and defective cabin heating.
